Credit: Olivier JourdanetThe City of Brotherly Love will be showing lots of love for the late David Bowie this month, as the 2020 edition of Philadelphia’s annual “Philly Loves Bowie Week” kicks off Friday, January 3.
The celebration, which runs through Sunday, January 12, will offer a wide variety of Bowie-related events and activities at different locations around the city.
Things get underway on Friday at noon ET with a kickoff concert at World Cafe Live featuring Bowie tribute band Candy Volcano. Later that day, the National Liberty Museum will host an opening reception for a new pop-up exhibit dubbed “We Can Be Heroes: A Bowie Inspired Art Exhibition” that will run through February 3.
On Saturday, January 4, Candy Volcano will play the entire Diamond Dogs album, plus select other Bowie tunes, at Theatre of Living Arts, while the Foto Club venue will host a Bowie-themed dance party.
On Sunday, January 5, Donny McCaslin Group, who were Bowie’s main collaborators on the Blackstar album — plus longtime Bowie bassist Gail Ann Dorsey — will play a concert at Ardmore Music Hall. McCaslin also will take part in a pre-show interview.
On Monday, January 6, a screening of The Sigma Kids, a new film about Bowie’s time spent in Philadelphia recording his Young Americans album, will take place at The Roxy Theater.
Events on Wednesday, January 8, which would’ve been David’s 73rd birthday, include Bowie karaoke at Johnny Brenda’s and a Bowie-themed burlesque show at Ruby Club.
The celebration’s finale, dubbed “A Night of Stardust,” will be held Saturday, January 11, at Union Transfer. Among the performers taking part in the concert will be singer/songwriter Jeffrey Gaines and one-time Bowie backing singer and ex-girlfriend Ava Cherry.
