Three area high school basketball teams played their openers in the George Kell Classic Saturday at Tuckerman.
Salem ended up getting eliminated from the boys’ bracket. In a battle between Greyhounds, Salem was edged out by Marmaduke 45-43.
Salem did not fare any better on the girls’ side. The Lady Greyhounds were bounced by Pocahontas by a final of 65-36.
Izard County’s girls were also one and done in the tournament. The Lady Cougars fell to Trumann 63-28.
Both championship games of the North Arkansas College Invitational High School Tournament ended with Bergman falling to Valley Springs at the Pioneer Pavilion in Harrison.
The girls’ game ended with the Lady Panthers losing to the Lady Tigers 65-53. Halle Miller led Valley Springs with 21 points, Haylie Fry scored 12, Whitney Coffelt had 11, and Maura Moore added 10 points.
Bergman’s fortunes were not any better in the boys’ contest, as they fell to Valley Springs 71-54. The Panthers were led by Elijah Royce with 16 points. For the Tigers, Isaac Ragland had 31 points, and Briley Saunier chipped in 10.
Elsewhere, Dora’s boys had another dominating victory, as they beat up on Billings 89-49 in the West Plains Civic Center. Isaac Haney was the Falcons’ top scorer with 31 points, Mason Luna finished with 21, and Bryson Luna ended up with 15.
