Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for The Recording AcademyIt’s an exciting time to be Chad Smith. The Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer has a new art exhibit out, he’s featured on the upcoming Ozzy Osbourne solo album, and, as he confirms to ABC Audio, he’s making a new record with his main band.

“We’re gonna make a new record,” Smith says of the Chili Peppers.

“Creating new music is just so exciting, maybe more than ever,” he adds. “I’m just looking forward to getting in a room with my friends and make some music, and we’re gonna start real soon.”

Of course, hype around new Peppers music has been bolstered by the return of longtime guitarist John Frusciante, who’d been absent from the band since 2009. Smith doesn’t explicitly mention Frusciante by name — “With respect to everything, I’m trying to not talk about it,” he says — but he assures that, “everything is very positive for the band.”

“We’re super excited to make new music and get in a room and do what we do,” Smith says. “I’m very confident that we’ll come up with some good music this year.”

The most recent RHCP album is 2016’s The Getaway.

Smith’s art exhibit, The Art of Chad Smith, is open now at the Russell Collection Fine Art Gallery in Austin, Texas.
