A rural Mountain Home man has been arrested for roughing up his grandmother after she refused to give him $5 to buy drugs. Thirty-year-old Nicholas Charlie Stephens is facing two felonies and one misdemeanor charge for the incident.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Baxter County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on Timberwood Lane in the Buford area Sunday evening, when a 73-year-old woman reported her grandson had hit her in the head when she wouldn’t give him $5 to buy drugs. When deputies arrived, Stephens was on the front porch of the residence and immediately starting screaming saying he didn’t hurt her.

The grandmother, who had gone to a neighbor’s house, returned and told deputies when she refused to give Stephens the money he asked for, he started screaming and cussing at her. She says she tried to get away, but Stephens followed her into another room, grabbed her by the head and shook her violently.

She was able to get away and tried to leave the house, but Stephens allegedly kept her from exiting the house. She said she was able to get the front door open and scream for help. She told deputies a friend of her grandson’s heard her and helped her get out of the house and safely to a neighbor’s residence.

When deputies told Stephens he was being arrested, he allegedly refused to walk to the vehicle and fought with officers, as they tried to get him to the car place him in the backseat.

Stephens is charged with felony counts of aggravated assault on a family or household member and first-degree false imprisonment, along with a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.
