19 area teams to compete in state tournaments

State tournaments begin this week for high school basketball in Arkansas and Missouri, and a total of 19 area teams will be competing.

Mountain Home’s girls will be at Russellville for the Class 5A State Tournament, as they will be matched up with Vilonia on Tuesday. The Lady Bombers are 21-6 after finishing in a tie for third place in the 5A-East with Jonesboro. Mountain Home ended up as the conference’s fourth-seeded team, after the Lady Hurricane won the tiebreaker for the No. 3 seed. The Lady Eagles are the 5A-West conference champions with a record of 25-2. Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Class 1A State Tournament will be held at Lake Hamilton High School in Pearcy with Kirby as the designated host, and eight area teams will compete. In girls’ action, Viola meets Mount Vernon-Enola Tuesday at 7 p.m., Mammoth Spring faces Greers Ferry West Side Wednesday at 1, Norfork takes on Concord Wednesday at 4, and Rural Special plays Hillcrest Wednesday at 7. On the boys’ side, Izard County will be paired with Bradford Tuesday at 8:30, Viola meets Wonderview Wednesday at 2:30, Mammoth Spring faces Concord Wednesday at 5:30, and Jasper takes on Kirby Thursday at 5:30.

Three local teams will take part in the Class 2A State Tournament at Quitman. On the girls’ bracket, Melbourne tips off against Fordyce Tuesday at 1 p.m., and Flippin plays Des Arc Wednesday at 7. Flippin’s boys will be matched up with Pangburn Wednesday at 8:30.

Four area teams will be featured in the Class 3A State Tournament at Charleston. In the girls’ games, Valley Springs meets Fouke Tuesday at 7, and Mountain View faces Helena-West Helena Wednesday at 4. On the boys’ side, Valley Springs takes on Helena-West Helena Tuesday at 8:30, and Bergman plays Dumas Wednesday at 8:30.

The Harrison girls will have a first-round bye in the Class 4A State Tournament at Farmington. The Lady Goblins’ first game will be Friday at 7, when they play the winner of Thursday’s game between Pulaski Academy and Nashville.

Dora’s boys will head to Mountain Grove Tuesday for their first game in the Class 1 State Tournament. The Falcons are set for a 7:45 tip-off, as their sectional opponent will be South Iron from Annapolis.

The Ava boys will be in Rolla on Wednesday for their opener in the Class 3 State Tournament. The Bears will meet St. Pius X from Festus on the Missouri S&T campus. Gametime is set for 7:45.
