Area basketball teams win state tournament openers

Two local teams won their openers in the Class 1A State Tournament at Lake Hamilton High School in Pearcy.
Viola’s girls dominated in their first game with a 59-36 decision over Mount Vernon-Enola. The Lady Longhorns improve to 37-2 on the year, and their next game will be Friday against the winner of Thursday’s game between County Line and Caddo Hills.
The Izard County boys invoked the mercy rule, as they destroyed Bradford 74-32. Coby Everett was the Cougars’ top scorer with 18 points, Caleb Faulkner had 14, and Justus Cooper finished with 13. Izard County’s boys are now 37-5, and they’ll play again Friday against either Kingston or Bradley.

Melbourne’s girls breezed through the opening game of the Class 2A State Tournament at Quitman, as they beat up on Fordyce 67-27. The Lady Bearkatz have a mark of 31-2, and they will return Thursday to face the winner of Wednesday’s game between Eureka Springs and Bigelow.

Valley Springs came away with a sweep to start the Class 3A State Tournament at Charleston.
The Lady Tigers began the night by destroying Fouke 77-53. Valley Springs improves 35-7, and its next game will be Friday against either Harding Academy or Lamar.
The Valley Springs boys followed up with a 78-63 victory over Helena-West Helena. The Tigers stand at 36-3, and their next opponent will be either Osceola or Episcopal Collegiate on Friday.

Dora’s boys were victorious in a battle between Missouri’s two top-ranked teams in Class 1. The Falcons won their sectional game in the Class 1 State Tournament at Mountain Grove, as they topped South Iron 59-54. Bryson Luna paced Dora with 18 points, Isaac Haney scored 17, Mason Luna added 14 points, and Waylon Masters grabbed 10 rebounds. The Falcons improve to 29-2, and they’ll be in Van Buren Saturday, as they meet Delta in the quarterfinals.

Elsewhere, the season came to an end for the West Plains boys in the semifinals of the Class 4, District 11 Tournament at Marshfield. The Zizzers fell to top-seeded Logan-Rogersville 72-52. West Plains’ final record is 13-14.

Branson’s boys were eliminated from the Class 5, District 11 Tournament at Parkview High School in Springfield. The Pirates lost to top-seeded Springfield Kickapoo 65-50 in the semifinals. Branson’s year ends at 10-18.
