Viola girls, Izard County boys among area teams winning in state quarterfinals

There was high school basketball on Friday, as three area teams competed in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Tournament at Lake Hamilton High School in Pearcy.
Viola’s girls are one win away from punching their ticket to Hot Springs after routing Caddo Hills 53-27. The Lady Longhorns improve to 38-2 on the season.
Rural Special watched its year come to an end in another girls’ contest falling to Alpena 62-57. The Lady Rebels’ final record is 20-14.
On the boys’ side, Izard County advanced to the semifinals following a high-scoring game, in which they defeated Bradley 91-78. Justus Cooper led the Cougars with 28 points and 20 rebounds, Coby Everett scored 26 points, Caleb Faulkner had 16, and Dylan Tharp added 10 points. Izard County is now 38-5 on the year.

Valley Springs had mixed results in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A State Tournament at Charleston.
The Lady Tigers will continue playing after topping Lamar by a final of 70-56. Valley Springs’ record improves to 35-7.
Valley Springs did not fare as well on the boys’ bracket losing to Osceola 62-54. The Tigers’ season ends with a mark of 36-4.

The Harrison girls were one-and-done in the Class 4A State Tournament at Farmington after falling to Pulaski Academy 49-44. The Lady Goblins will wrap up the campaign at 27-5.

In Missouri, West Plains’ girls secured a state tournament bid, as they dominated the title game of the Class 4, District 11 Tournament at Marshfield. The Lady Zizzers beat up on Logan-Rogersville 58-28. West Plains improves to 27-1 on the season and will meet Carl Junction in the sectional round of the Class 4 State Tournament Tuesday at Nixa.
