LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Arkansas will keep its schools closed another three weeks and is banning sit-down service at bars and restaurants as the number of coronavirus cases in the state continues to rise, Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced Thursday.

Hutchinson detailed the new restrictions as health officials said the number of COVID-19 cases in the state had risen to 62. COVID-19 is the illness caused by the new coronavirus.

For most people, the virus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with preexisting health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.

The vast majority of people recover from the virus. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild cases recover in about two weeks, while others could take three to six weeks to get well.

The state’s public schools, which had been set to reopen on March 30 after a two-week closure, will now remain closed until April 17, Hutchinson said.

Also, starting Friday, restaurants will be allowed to offer only take-out, curbside and delivery service, he said. Gyms also are closed for non-essential services.
