The Alley-White American Legion Auxiliary Unit 52 in Mountain Home is accepting applications for delegates to Arkansas Girls State. The 78th-annual session is scheduled for May 24 through 29 at Harding University in Searcy.

The purpose of Girls State is to educate young women in the duties, privileges and responsibilities of American citizenship and provide an opportunity for them to participate in the actual functioning of their government.

The local auxiliary is recruiting young women completing their junior year of high school, have enjoyed government classes and have an active interest in current events. A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher and no record of misconduct in grades nine through 11 are qualifications for Girls State.

Application packets are available online at arkansasgirlsstate.com under “Delegate Information.” Home-schooled students meeting other eligibility requirements are also encouraged to apply. Girls interested in attending should notify their counselor at school before registering online. The deadline to register has been extended to April 10 because of school closures.

The only costs to the delegate or her parents are for transportation to and from Harding University and spending money. Delegate fees of $250 for lodging, meals and all activities, including a field trip to the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock, will be sponsored by Unit 52 and other local individuals, businesses and civic organizations. Tax-deductible contributions to the 2020 Girls State Fund in any amount are greatly appreciated.
