A pair of area high school girls’ basketball teams will end up sharing a state championship this year. Mountain View and Valley Springs were declared Class 3A co-champions, after the Arkansas Activities Association canceled the remaining title games originally scheduled for last month due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The AAA had postponed the championship games for Classes 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A, originally scheduled for March 13 and 14. The announcement was made on March 12 in Hot Springs, as the title games for Classes 1A and 2A were in progress. Melbourne’s girls ended up as the Class 2A state champions, and the Viola girls and Izard County boys finished as runners-up in Class 1A.
Plans are being developed to honor and recognize the teams and student athletes qualifying for the championship games.
