10 area athletes, 2 coaches honored from basketball season

The Arkansas Basketball Coaches Association has released its top five boys’ and girls’ basketball players and the coaches of the year from the 2019-2020 season. Ten area athletes and two coaches received recognition.

Mountain Home’s Kate Gilbert was the fifth-ranked player among the Class 5A girls. Gilbert ended the year with an average of 12.5 points, three assists and three rebounds per game for the Lady Bombers. She also shot 36% from the field and 29.5% from three-point range.

Six local athletes made the list for Class 1A. Viola was represented on the girls’ side with A.J. McCandlis as the top-ranked player, Samantha McCandlis at No. 3, and Keyaira Moore at No. 4. Izard County had the top three boys’ players in the order of Justus Cooper, Caleb Faulkner and Coby Everett.

Melbourne’s girls are represented by an athlete and a coach in Class 2A. Kenley McCann is the top-rated player, and Eric Teague was named the coach of the year.

Two athletes and one coach received honors in Class 3A. For the Mountain View girls, Aubrey Isbell is the No. 1 ranked athlete, and Casey Scribner was selected as the coach of the year. On the boys’ side, the top-ranked player is Isaac Rayland of Valley Springs.
