Courtesy of Lynyrd SkynyrdWith little fanfare, Lynyrd Skynyrd released a brand-new song called “Last of the Street Survivors” as a digital single earlier this month. The tune, which shares its title with the Southern-rock legend’s ongoing farewell tour, pays tribute the many band members that have passed away while celebrating the fact that the group is still on the road.
The song was co-written by Skynyrd’s three core members — founding guitarist Gary Rossington, and longtime lead singer Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Ricky Medlocke — along with veteran songwriter/producer Tom Hambridge.
The lyrics to the song’s chorus are: “They’re still with us/ We’re never alone/ Out here on the 75, keeping the dream alive/ Highway brothers and midnight riders/ We’re the last of the street survivors.”
A message posted on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Facebook page notes that the tune is “[a] little gift from our Skynyrd family to yours, adding, “We want thank everyone for making this possible. Stay safe and God bless.”
The band has made “Last of the Street Survivors” available as a free download and via streaming for a limited time, and you also can check it out at the group’s official YouTube channel.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Lynyrd Skynyrd has postponed many of its spring tour dates and rescheduled them for the fall. The next show on the band’s schedule currently is a June 13 performance at the Country Thunder Iowa festival in Forest City, Iowa, which is supposed to be followed by a summer European trek. Of course, things may change depending on how the health crisis pans out.
