Roy’s Boys/Legacy RecordingsRoy Orbison was born 84 years ago today, and in celebration of the late rock ‘n’ roll legend’s birthday, a special screening of the Black & White Night 30 concert film will take place at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT at his official Facebook page.
The event is being presented by Orbison’s sons Wesley, Roy Jr. and Alex, also known as Roy’s Boys. According to a video message, Roy Jr. will offer live commentary during the screening and answer fans questions, while some musicians who participated in the concert may be on hand as well.
Black & White Night 30 is a re-imagined, re-edited and remastered version of Orbison’s star-studded 1988 concert special Black & White Night that was released in 2017 to mark the 30th anniversary of the event’s filming.
Black & White Night, which originally aired as a cable-TV special, documents a specially staged concert that took place in Los Angeles in September 1987, and that featured Orbison performing with Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, T Bone Burnett, Bonnie Raitt, k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes and J.D. Souther.
Serving as the backing group that evening was Elvis Presley‘s famed TCB Band, which included guitar great James Burton, keyboardist Glen D. Hardin, bassist Jerry Scheff and drummer Ronnie Tutt.
Black & White Night 30 includes performances and camera angles not featured in the original special.
Burton says about the concert, “Black & White Night is one of my all-time favorite shows with amazing musicians and a star-studded audience. Roy and I keying off of each other was always thrilling and he was such a pro and a wonderful entertainer. What a night that was!”
Orbison died of a heart attack in December 1988 at the age of 52.
