SIKESTON, Mo. (AP) – A southeast Missouri man is dead after he was shot by police during a confrontation early Wednesday, authorities said.

Officers responding to a call about shots being fired at a Sikeston home found a 49-year-old man suffering from several gunshot wounds, said Jim McMillen, director of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

The man told officers his son had shot him and fled, McMillen said. The man was hospitalized but his condition was not immediately available.

While officers were processing the scene, the suspect returned and asked officers to shoot him, McMillen said.

McMillen said the situation escalated, leading to the officers shoot the suspect, The Sikeston Standard Democrat reported.

Three officers were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure after officer-involved shootings.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will investigate the shooting.
