The 58th Annual Arkansas Folk Festival is the latest community-wide event canceled due to COVID-19. The annual event is held on the third Saturday in April, but had tentatively been moved to mid-May this year.

On Monday, the Mountain View Area Chamber of Commerce announced the cancellation saying the step was necessary to protect the health of area citizens by maintaining social distancing and following the directives of Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

Chamber officials say they are aware of tentative measures to reopen commerce in early May, but that will not include large festivals and gatherings.

Activities at the annual event include music on the square, a Saturday morning parade and vendors.

The Mountain View event is just the latest to be placed on the cancellation list for 2020 due to the pandemic.

Earlier, cancellations include the 19th Annual Greater Cotter Trout Festival. This event originally scheduled for May 2 is held annually at Cotter’s Big Spring Park.

Also on the cancellation list is Pioneer Days at Norfork. Pioneer Days is traditionally held on the third Saturday in May. In 2019, the festival expanded to a two-day event beginning the third Friday in May, after running as a one-day event for several years.

The coronavirus has also led to the cancellation of the 18th Annual Gassville in the Park festival. This annual event had been set for June 6. .

Other area festival cancellations include Harrison’s Annual Crawdad Days, Melbourne’s Pioneer Days and the 2020 Fulton County Homecoming Festival previously scheduled for May 22 and 23.
