Another local school has announced it will switch to a four-day academic week.

Mountain Home Christian Academy (MHCA) will conduct classes this fall from 8 a.m. to 3:46 p.m., Mondays through Thursday.

“The majority of parents and staff members prefer having Fridays off,” school officials say, citing a recent survey. “Parents say they want more time with their children for mentoring, family travel and rest.”

MHCA’s first day of the 2020-2021 school year is slated for Aug. 17.

Also announced are additional changes to the schools scheduling and curriculum. MHCA will be departmentalizing grades five through eight and implementing block scheduling for grades five through 12. Both traditional classroom instruction and online instruction will be used. The extended class time will allow teachers to cover subjects with more depth and spend more time on experiments and projects.

MHCA officials say its high school students’ ACT average score is 25.6, compared to the average Arkansas high school score of 19.4. This year, a junior MHCA student was named the Arkansas State University-Mountain Home Academic Achiever in composition.

The school has also seen success in its athletic programs. Both the boys’ and the girls’ senior varsity basketball teams are their current conference champions. The senior boys team competed in the National Christian School Tournament in Ohio in March.

Children ages 3 through 12th grade can be enrolled at the school, located at 1989 Glenbriar Drive, just off the Sheid-Hopper Bypass in Mountain Home. To learn more about MHCA or the upcoming four-day school schedule, go to www.choosemhca.com.
