A 20-year-old felon from Izard County has been arrested following an incident Sunday in which law enforcement says he jerked away from a deputy and pulled a pistol out of his pants and threw the weapon. A formal charge of felon in possession of a firearm is expected to be filed against Jesse Sanders of Calico Rock, according to Izard County Chief Deputy Charley Melton. The latest charges against Sanders follow his third arrest in just over two years, with 18 violations filed.

In the latest incident, in a news release Melton says a deputy responded to a call in Dolph reporting vehicles driving in a reckless manner. The deputy observed one of the vehicles in question allegedly driving as described and stopped it.

Sanders reportedly immediately exited the vehicle. As the deputy approached Sanders to place him in handcuffs, the Izard County man reportedly removed the weapon from his clothing.

As a result of the incident, Sanders is also facing charges of DWI second offense, minor in possession of alcohol, driving on a suspended driver’s license, careless driving, no seat belt, resisting arrest and fleeing.

Sanders is under supervision of Arkansas Community Corrections for his previous felony convictions.

Those convictions are in connection with a plea agreement reached just less than four months ago. In February, Sanders was sentenced to five years probation on revocation charges of commercial burglary and criminal mischief, as well as unlawful use of a communication device and three felony drug-related charges and unauthorized use of another person’s property to facilitate a certain crime.

The commercial burglary and criminal mischief charges stem from incidents in early 2018. Law enforcement responded to a break-in at the VFW in Calico Rock. The facility had been vandalized, with all the music equipment thrown on the floor, the oven window and all coffee pots smashed, a cash box and brief case missing, an American flag thrown on the floor and multiple beer bottles scattered around the building. Plaques that had been hanging were thrown on the floor.

A cellphone found at the scene was used to connect Sanders to the crime scene.

The following day, law enforcement responded to a burglary at a Calico Rock business where tools and other items were taken.

When Sanders was interviewed, the phone number he provided on his rights form matched the cellphone found at the VFW crime scene. He reportedly admitted breaking into both establishments with as many as four juveniles at one crime scene. Several bags containing tools, jewelry, knives and other miscellaneous items taken from the Calico Rock business were located at Sanders’ home.
