Three Mountain Home High School 2020 graduates are the recipients of this year’s Friends of the Baxter County Library essay scholarships.

This year’s scholarships totaled $2,800. Applicants were required to submit an essay on this year’s topic, which was to discuss the impact on a community or civilization with an absence of or limited access to library services, citing current day, historical or literary examples.

First place of $1,500 was awarded to Grace Beckham. Beckham plans to attend the College of Theology and Christian Ministry at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, majoring in faith and social justice with a minor in psychology.

Second place of $800 was awarded to Hunter Preis. Preis plans to attend Arkansas Tech University in Russellville and intends to major in business data analytics.

Third place and $500 was awarded to Olivia Hill. Hill plans to attend Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, and intends to double major in biology and biochemistry.

The Friends of the Library will be accepting essay submissions for next year’s scholarship beginning in February 2021. The scholarship is open to high school graduating seniors in Baxter County with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and who have been accepted by an accredited school of higher education.

Since its founding in 1980, the Friends of the Library group has given over $600,000 to the library as of May 2020. The group’s goal is to aid in developing public understanding of the library and making it better known to the citizens of the community. Members of Friends donate their time and efforts to provide funds that would not otherwise be available.
