Remains of missing hiker found near Buffalo National River

The remains of a hiker missing near the Buffalo National River have been found. Search and rescue personnel discovered the remains of 65-year-old Thomas Reid of West Memphis around 11 Wednesday morning in the Sneeds Creek drainage area south of Compton.

The National Park Service will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of death.

Reid and his brother were hiking along the Center Point Trail Saturday and veered off to the Sneeds Creek Trail where Reid reportedly injured his leg and his brother went to get help. When the brother returned, Reid could not be found. He was last seen about 5 Saturday evening.

The National Park Service led the search and rescue operation, which included Buffalo National River Search and Rescue, Arkansas Alliance Bloodhound Search Specialists, Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Arkansas Forestry Commission, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas State Police, Mennonite Disaster Services, Compton Fire Department and the County Line Baptist Church.
