Homelessness continues to be an issue throughout the United States, and the Twin Lakes Area is not immune. For men in the past, local organizations would furnish a motel room for one or two nights. Some men might have had to sleep in a street or a park. There was no long-term support for males until October 2001 with the opening of the Alpha House shelter on East Seventh Street in Mountain Home.

Alpha House Executive Director Bill Webster was a recent guest of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM, and he says the Christian-based transitional shelter takes in homeless men going through tough times in their lives.

Webster says the homeless population is growing, along with the city of Mountain Home. Alpha House had to pick and choose the portion of the homeless population to take in, and Webster says transitional was chosen.

Alpha House’s mission is to provide safe shelter, one-on-one counseling, spiritual guidance, job assistance and independence. Webster says the biggest obstacle the shelter faces is finances.
