Jasper elementary teacher Courtney Farmer has been named Arkansas Rural Education Association’s (AREA) Teacher of the Year for northern Arkansas.

The AREA website notes two awards are given annually for Teacher of the Year, one from each side of Interstate 40.

A Jasper Elementary School Facebook post notes Farmer has been an educator for 13 years. She has taught at Jasper Elementary the past four years. Farmer taught fourth and fifth grade literacy during the 2019-2020 school year. She is a National Board Certified teacher in early middle childhood reading: language arts, a lead instructor and a member of the school data and leadership teams.

Farmer will be honored at the AREA conference this summer.

The Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas have sponsored the Rural Teacher of the Year Award since 2004.

The AREA is a statewide organization affiliated with the National Rural Education Association. Its website notes the organization is dedicated to improving instruction and promoting quality education for all students in schools throughout the state, and it provides a unified voice for representing rural school districts to legislative bodies and public officials.
