LITTLE ROCK, Ark (AP) – Arkansas reported 503 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday and eight additional deaths related to the new coronavirus.

State health officials said the total number of confirmed cases climbed to 28,367. The death toll for the outbreak, which officials began tracking in early March, was 321 Sunday.

The true number of cases in Arkansas is likely higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.

Arkansas’ virus cases have dramatically risen since May, when the state began allowing businesses to reopen. As of Sunday, there were more than 6,400 active cases in the state, and nearly 21,600 people who’d had COVID-19 have recovered, according to health officials.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
