A 63-year-old Mountain Home man pled guilty to drug-related charges during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court July 9.

Roger Welch was sentenced to four years probation. As Circuit Judge John Putman was pronouncing sentence, he told Welch, “You are almost as old as I am, and you surely don’t need to be using this stuff.”

In late January, a vehicle in which Welch was a passenger was pulled over by an Arkansas State Police trooper for a traffic violation.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the trooper found those in the vehicle to be “extremely nervous.”

The owner of the vehicle granted permission for the trooper to conduct a search.

Welch was discovered to have a piece of tinfoil in his pocket containing a substance field testing positive for methamphetamine.

In his report, the trooper noted the tin foil was commonly referred to as a “boat” and was used to ingest methamphetamine.

Welch was charged with possessing the methamphetamine and the “boat.”
