2 area towns receive water, wastewater project funding

Two area towns have been awarded funding for water and wastewater projects by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Commission. Fifty-Six and Jasper are among five communities approved for over $7.4 million by the state.Fifty-Six received a loan of over $831,000 from the Water Development Fund for the installation of 4 1/2 miles of waterline. The customer base for the project is 230.

Jasper received a loan of $440,000 and another loan of over $1.3 million, with principal forgiveness from the Arkansas Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund. Improvements to the wastewater treatment facility will serve 246 customers.

During the fiscal year 2020, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture dispersed a total of over $94 million in federal and state funding for water and wastewater projects. With funding from the Environmental Protection Agency, the state dispersed over $78.5 million through the Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund and the Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund. Nearly $16 million in state funding were provided through the Water Development Fund, the Water Sewer and Solid Waste Fund and the Consolidated General Obligation Bond program.
