A woman who tried to swallow drugs and bit the finger of a deputy sheriff trying to retrieve them was sentenced to prison during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court July 23.

Forty-three-year-old Eva York of Gassville was sentenced to four years in prison. She was stopped by a Mountain Home police officer in late May last year for driving on a suspended license.

As she was being pulled over, the officer observed York “moving her clothing around.” After she got out of her vehicle, the officer saw York using her hands to again move her shirt and bra. At one point, she turned her back to the officer and put her hand to her mouth. When asked what she had done, York was unable to answer, because of whatever she had put in her mouth.

York refused several commands to spit out what she was apparently trying to swallow.

The officer reported putting her in a controlled neck restraint preventing her from swallowing.

York finally spit out a plastic bag containing three other smaller bags, one of which contained a white crystalline substance.

York later admitted the plastic bags contained methamphetamine and marijuana.

Even after getting rid of the bags, York appeared to have something else in her mouth.

Another police officer and a deputy sheriff arrived on the scene to assist. The female deputy, who was wearing gloves, attempted to remove whatever was left in York’s mouth, but the Gassville woman bit her finger.

Another controlled neck restraint was applied, as York continued to struggle. She finally spit out several blister packs of a drug whose uses include treatment of opioid withdrawal symptoms.

When she was searched, York was found to also have a glass smoking pipe with white residue in her bra.

York was charged with battery, tampering with evidence, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia and refusal to submit to arrest.
