The search for a missing Newton County man has been expanded nationwide.

Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler says newly discovered evidence indicates 20-year-old Jonathan Barrett Brantley of Mount Judea may have decided to travel “across America,” after indicating he had had “suicidal thoughts.”

Sheriff Wheeler says, as a result of the new evidence, his law enforcement bulletin has been updated and distributed nationwide.

Brantley was reportedly last seen last Thursday night in the Mount Judea area, and he was reportedly going to a nearby residence where he did work for the owner. His direction of travel once he left was unknown. His phone was found at the residence where he had been working.

Brantley was in possession of cash and has not been using a debit card or any traceable electronics that the sheriff’s department is aware of, and no friends or family have indicated hearing from him. Brantley drives a silver 2003 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with temporary tags.

Sheriff Wheeler says, “We really hope Barrett makes contact with someone or is contacted by law enforcement. We are very concerned for his well-being. He’s a very good young man and has a lot to offer and live for.”

He says, “One of our best hopes is the public’s help. Our initial Facebook post has been shared over 13,000 times. We truly appreciate everyone getting word out. Please continue to do so.”

Anyone with any information about Brantley’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Newton County Sheriff’s Office at (870) 446-5124, option 1.
