Melbourne prepares for football season

High school football will be starting in about a week-and-a-half in Arkansas, and preparations continue for local teams, along with safety concerns during the pandemic. Melbourne has been on the practice field from the moment permission was given from the Arkansas Activities Association and the Arkansas Department of Health.

Kevin McCarn is beginning his eighth season leading the Bearkatz, and he has been pleased with the team’s effort. They’ve had approximately 30 kids on the gridiron, which is normal for Melbourne, and McCarn says the biggest challenge is getting the squad in shape.

The Bearkatz have a benefit scrimmage scheduled for Thursday night at Hoxie. The junior high game will kick off at 5:30, followed by the high school contest at 7.
