The Mountain Home City Council will hear a proposal to amend an ordinance establishing tobacco-free zones Thursday evening during its regular monthly meeting. The city first passed an ordinance addressing tobacco-free zones in 1998.The original Ordinance 98-014 established the following areas as tobacco free:

– L.C. Sammons Youth Center and its parking lot

– The public pool at Cooper Park

– All playground equipment areas

– All concession stands and area immediately surrounding concession stands

– All bleacher areas, unless otherwise designated

– All indoor facilities of the City of Mountain Home

The update would include the congregated areas within Hickory Park, unless otherwise designated. Since the establishment of the Farmers and Merchants Bank stage at the park, the venue has began hosting the weekly Friday Night Live music series and the Baxter Summer Concert Series. With no provisions to prohibit it, some attendees have been seen smoking tobacco throughout the park, creating a nuisance for non-smoking concert goers.

Anyone found in violation of the ordinance will be subject to a fine of not less that $25 and not more than $100.

The only other ordinance under consideration is to waive competitive bidding and authorize the purchase of a Trimble R12 Survey GPS Rover Unit for the Mountain Home Street Department. The unit would replace an older GPS rover unit, which would be purchased from Navigation Electronics Inc., of Lafayette, Louisiana, at a cost of no more than $32,000, according to the ordinance.

The street department says due to the purchase and amount of the purchase, it would like to purchase the unit from a sole-source provider.

The council will also hear a presentation from Duncan Clayton, chairman of the entertainment district oversight committee.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the council chambers of the Mountain Home Municipal Building.
