A Fulton County man, 41-year-old Glenn R. Chance Jr. of Salem, has been arrested following a pursuit in which he allegedly crashed his truck into a law enforcement patrol unit, in an attempt to evade arrest.

According to the probable cause affidavit, law enforcement reported observing Chance’s vehicle speeding on Squirrel Hill Road east of Salem on Aug. 15 and began to follow his truck. Chance’s truck allegedly passed another vehicle on a double-yellow line at a high rate of speed, leading to a pursuit reaching a speed of almost 100 miles per hour.

The pursuit began on paved roadway and continued onto Deer Bend Trail, which is gravel. When Chance realized the trail was also a dead end, he pulled into a driveway, with his vehicle making a 180-degree turn in a yard.

After making the turn, Chance’s vehicle was headed straight at the patrol unit. The officer reported turning to the right to avoid being struck, turned around and resumed the pursuit.

At the intersection with Squirrel Hill Road, Chance was unable to make the turn, with his vehicle sliding off the roadway into a ditch. He continued driving, returning to the roadway.

The officer reported thick dust, as he continued his pursuit, leading him to slow his patrol unit. He said all of a sudden, all he could see were the taillights of Chance’s truck.

He reported Chance had gone from traveling at a high rate of speed to quickly coming almost to a complete stop. He attempted to avoid the truck by turning his unit, but it was too late, as his patrol unit collided with Chance’s vehicle.

The officer noted Chance was trying to make him wreck to evade arrest.

He said it felt as though his patrol unit was being pulled by Chance’s truck. As the truck went to the right, the officer said he was able to get his patrol unit stopped. He exited with his duty weapon drawn, commanding Chance out of his truck. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Chance has been charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and fleeing, as well as misdemeanors of reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. He was also cited for passing on a double-yellow line and no proof of liability insurance. His bond was set at $5,000.
