SEDALIA, Mo. (AP) – Two people were arrested after Sedalia police removed 78 cats from a home, where more than two dozen other cats were found buried in the back yard, police said.
Officers went to the home Wednesday after receiving a tip. They found the cats inside a 941-square-foot home, KMBC-TV reported.
Many of the cats needed immediate medical care and some died despite receiving that care, police said.
Dead kittens were found in bags inside the home and 27 cats — 20 of them kittens — were buried in the backyard.
Fifteen veterinarians helped examine the surviving cats at the Sedalia Animal Shelter. Those who are healthy enough will be given to shelters around the state to be put up for adoption.
Ferdinand M. Bucayan, 37, and Teodora Dalumpines, 59, were arrested and taken to the Pettis County Jail on suspicion of animal abuse and neglect.
