The American College Application Campaign (ACAC) has recognized Mountain Home High School Career Academies as being among a group of exemplary schools throughout the United States helping students pursue postsecondary success. The local high school, through the Arkansas State University-Mountain Home College and Career Coach Program, won the 2019 ACAC School of Excellence Award for Arkansas.

The ACAC is a national effort to increase the number of first-generation college students and students from low-income families pursuing a college degree or another higher education credential. The campaign is part of ACT’s Center for Equity in Learning. School of Excellence Award recipients were selected based on a demonstrated commitment to student success, serving as a model for their state’s application and timely submission of data.

Mountain Home was among the winners of the inaugural award. ASU-Mountain Home College and Career Coach Supervisor Christy Keirn says the university has a wonderful partnership not only with Mountain Home, but with Cotter and Flippin. Keirn adds the goal is to increase accessibility to college and higher education for all students, and she praises Mountain Home career coaches Vanesa Roberts and Tracy Stephens for being recognized by ACT as the best in Arkansas.

For the 2020 campaign season, the ACAC will formally kick off the college application season with a #WhyApply Day social media campaign on Friday, Sept. 18, to encourage young people to make a plan for education beyond high school. Schools interested in hosting a college application event can register online at equityinlearning.act.org/acac.
