Deer archery season got underway Saturday and restrictions on deer hunting remain relaxed this year at Buffalo Point due to current deer populations. The map above shows the new area open only to deer archery hunting, represented by the peach colored area.

This area is north of Arkansas Highway 14 and west of the Buffalo Point Campground. Hunting is not allowed within 100 feet of a road or trail or within 50 yards of a structure.

The campground and developed areas will remain closed to hunting, and weapons must be unloaded and cased during the time one is in parking areas or in the campground.

Overpopulation of deer can damage the forest and crops, increase automobile accidents, and contribute to the spread of Lyme disease. With fewer natural predators, deer populations can become out of balance with the land’s carrying capacity. Buffalo National River (BNR) officials say It is important to keep their numbers in check.

Hunter orange is not required inside the Buffalo Point archery only hunting zone, regardless of archery or modern gun seasons. It is, however, recommended that hikers wear hunter orange.

BNR officials recommend getting to know regulations for hunting in this Wildlife Management Area (WMA). For detailed questions refer to the 2020-21 Arkansas Hunting Guidebook for Buffalo National River WMA (Zone 080).
