SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – A Springfield man has been charged with second-degree murder after a police chase ended with a fatal crash, authorities said.

Andrew Hammond, 20, was charged with second-degree murder after the crash Monday in Springfield.

The chase began when an officer spotted a white box truck that had been reported stolen from an apartment complex, according to a probable cause statement.

The truck went through a stop sign and hit a vehicle driven by 64-year-old Beth Adams, who died at a hospital, the statement said.

The officer pursuing the truck had stopped the chase before the crash, The Springfield News-Leader reported.

Hammond was treated for injuries and then taken to Greene County Jail, where he was being held without bond. Online court records do not list an attorney for him.

A passenger in the truck also was arrested.
