Izard County announces first COVID-19 death

The Izard County Health Department has reported the county’s first death due to COVID-19.

Via a post on department’s Facebook page, the department says a Melbourne man died on Oct. 2 due to complications from the coronavirus.

As of Wednesday, Izard County reported 47 positive cases, 41 of which are in the North Central Unit of the Department of Correction. Five cases are in the Mount Pleasant area, four in both Melbourne and Calico Rock, with one each reported in Violet Hill, Sage and Horseshoe Bend.

The department urges the public to follow CDC guidelines, “if you have had contact with a person with COVID-19 and to quarantine and to not be in public or around people if you are running a fever. Let’s continue to put forth that extra effort to social distance, wash your hands thoroughly and to wear a mask when you not able to social distance so that we can not only do our part to slow the progress but to also show respect for our neighbors and loved ones.”
