The Flippin Fire Department will utilize its Candy Slide 2020 to distribute treats Saturday evening. Children will place their bag or bucket under the opening and gravity will take care of the rest. All personnel manning the Candy Slide 2020 will be wearing PPE, so there will be no contact with the candy they will be passing out. The event will be held in the new addition to the station, the new parking lot across from EZ Mart.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office will host a trunk or treat from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Marion County Detention Center at 221 Randolph Road in Yellville. The event will be held in the front parking lot, and there will be a few patrol units available for kids to explore.

Newton County

Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler and his staff will once again be hosting trick or treating and a spook house at the old, historical Newton County Jail on Halloween night. Wheeler says they will be handing out candy and hot chocolate from 6 to 9. The old jail, located on Spring Street just north of the Jasper square, will also be set up as a spook house and can be toured by the public.

Wheeler says due to COVID-19 concerns the event would be handled a little differently this year. Only groups that arrive together will get to tour the jail together, with the next group going a few minutes later. Also, candy will be prepackaged in zipper baggies and will have been filled using gloves and various other precautions.

“2020 has been an interesting year,” Wheeler says. “But the kids of our community still need a safe place to visit for Halloween. We will utilize sanitary precautions and social distancing for the event and will offer a place parents can feel secure bringing their kids.”

The stone building that houses the old jail was built in the early 1900s and was used as the county’s jail until just a few years ago. The upstairs cells, which will be the ones being toured, are constructed of flat iron bars and are reported to have been the “brig” on an old ship. The metal boxes were disassembled and moved to the building where they were reconstructed. The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Wheeler says he and employees of the sheriff’s office, along with volunteers from the Newton County Reserve Deputy Association, and their families are volunteering their time to put on the event.

“Bring the kids out, let them have a positive interaction with law enforcement and, as an added bonus, get to dress up and get candy. Between this and the various ‘trunk or treat’ events at area churches, the kids will have several safe options that should make for a great evening.” Wheeler says.

Bakersfield trunk or treat will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Bakersfield’s Pride Park. Those handing out candy can set up as early as 4 p.m.
The Dora Saddle Club will host a trunk or treat at 4 p.m. Saturday. There will be free hotdogs, chips and soda for attendees, along with a costume contest and prizes. Those wishing to trick-or-treat should bring a bucket or bag to fill with candy. The saddle club is  on County Road 365 near Highways 181 and H.

Gainesville’s trunk or treat will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween night.

Those wishing to hand out candy must be set up on the square before 5:30 p.m. Setup can only be on the outer edge of the square. No one will be allowed to park or set up on the interior side of the square near the courthouse lawn. All candy-givers should be at least 6 feet apart. Setup can be in a decorated or undecorated trunk, table or in some other type of creative Halloween display.

Candy-givers are asked to wear a mask and gloves during the entire event and to wait until they arrive at the square to unwrap their candy for distribution.

They should also be careful to place the candy in each child’s bag or bucket instead of letting children grab candy on their own. Candy-givers should be set up by 5:30 p.m., and the event will begin at 6 p.m. There is no need to sign up ahead of time. Just show up before 5:30 p.m. The square will be shut down to traffic after that time.

Families with children participating in the event are asked to park in designated parking areas this year to help control the flow of traffic at the event. Parking is free. General parking will be available off Main Street at the Gainesville Saddle Club grounds and in the parking area on the site of the former Klayman dentist office, next to Chris Geroff’s dentist office. Handicapped parking will be available in the city-owned lot across from Shenanigans Arcade, also on Main Street, and at the lot above Donald Amyx’s building at Main and Fourth streets.

Participants should walk to the square, lining up along Main Street, being careful to maintain at least 6-foot social distancing between family groups. All participants should enter the square next to city hall.

A limited number of people will be allowed around the square, and participants should stay spread apart while doing one lap counter-clockwise around the square and then exiting again at city hall.

Parents and guardians should limit their group number if possible, and children should not intermingle while waiting in line.

The Theodosia Red Hatters will hold a trunk or treat for area youngsters from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Red Hatters Clubhouse across the street from Dollar General on Highway 160 in Theodosia.
