Former Yellville-Summit coach wins Joe Reese Award

A former high school football coach has been honored by the Arkansas High School Coaches Association. Former Yellville-Summit head coach Calvin Mallett was presented the Joe Reese Award in recognition of his service to the Arkansas Activities Association.

Mallett says he was surprised and honored to receive an award named after someone with whom he had closely worked.

Mallett has been a member of the Arkansas High School Coaches Association executive committee for 15 years, and he’s also a past president of the association. He is involved with the hall of fame, and he helps in selecting coaches, athletic administrators and officials to be inducted each year.

In addition, Mallett continues to remain involved with the All-Star games normally held around the start of summer in June and serves as the sponsor of the West team for the football game He says there have been some changes to the All-Star week since he joined the committee, and the most notable one is the relocation from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville to the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

Mallett remains Yellville-Summit’s longest-tenured head coach. He was at the helm of the Panthers’ program for 23 years. It’s been eight years since Mallett has been on the sideline, but he continues to serve the school district as the elementary principal.

Mallett was presented the award in Hot Springs during the hall of fame ceremony for the Arkansas High School Coaches Association, the Arkansas Officials Association and the Arkansas High School Athletic Administrators Association.
