LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – The top federal prosecutor for the eastern half of Arkansas will be stepping down at the end of the year.
U.S. Attorney Cody Hiland announced Thursday evening that he will be resigning from his position in the Eastern District of Arkansas on Dec. 31. He said he plans to pursue work in the private sector after leaving office.
Hiland, 48-year-old resident of Conway, said in a statement that the U.S. attorney job “has been the highest honor and most fulfilling duty of my public career.” He did not give a specific reason for his resignation.
U.S. attorneys are generally nominated by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. It is typical for new presidents to select their own batches of top federal prosecutors, and U.S. attorneys often resign around the end of an administration.
Hiland, who was previously an elected state prosecutor, took office in 2017 after being nominated by President Donald Trump. He is the latest in a string of top prosecutors nominated by Trump to step down following Joe Biden’s victory in the November presidential election.
