SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – Police in Springfield say officers shot a woman who hit an officer with a car before fleeing.

Springfield Chief Paul Williams said officers who were searching for stolen vehicles early Tuesday found one that had been reported stolen. When they tried to speak to the driver, she hit one of the officers while fleeing in the vehicle, he said.

That officer and two others fired at the woman, 27-year-old Maggie Thrift, who drove away from the scene, The Springfield News-Leader reported.

Officers located Thift at a home. She had been shot several times but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Williams said. She was hospitalized as of Tuesday afternoon.

The officer who was hit suffered minor injuries. Williams said the officers involved are on administrative leave, which is routine in police shootings.

Thrift was under arrest on outstanding warrants, and Williams said additional charges connected to Tuesday’s events would be submitted to prosecutors.
