A Flippin man who pled guilty to drug-related charges last year and was put on probation had his suspended sentence revoked during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court last Thursday.
Thirty-four-year-old Joshua Allen Bates was given three years in prison.
The revocation of the 10-year suspended sentence imposed in Baxter County was sought based largely on new charges in Marion County.
Bates has been charged in Marion County with assaulting his mother and not allowing her to leave her residence along Marion County Road 6065.
The mother told Marion County deputies that just prior to the physical and verbal attacks, her son’s “attitude and personality changed and he became a monster.”
She said the attacks continued for most of the day on Nov. 9 last year before she was able to escape and call 911.
The mother said Bates went outside at one point, and she recalls him yelling that he was “God and this is his last day, and I am having my last day.”
During the altercation, Bates is said to have said if his mother did not recognize him as God, he would kill her. He threatened at one point to take his mother to the Buffalo River and hold her head down in the sand and “leave her dead.”
Bates’ mother told investigators she was finally able to escape from the residence and hide along the bank of a nearby creek.
When she saw an opportunity, the mother said she left her hiding place and ran across a field to the home of a neighbor.
The neighbor said he saw the woman running, waving her hands and screaming for help. He reported he got into his vehicle, drove into the field, picked up the woman and took her back to his residence.
When deputies checked, they found Bates once had a no contact order for the mother’s residence, which was issued after a previous domestic battery incident in January involving Bates and his parent.
The order was apparently dismissed in October last year.
Bates’ Marion County charges include domestic battery, terroristic threatening and false imprisonment.
In Baxter County, the charges to which he pled guilty and received his suspended sentence were drug-related and stemmed from a traffic stop early last year.
He was reported to have methamphetamine and a homemade smoking device used to ingest the drug.
When it was found Bates was still hiding a glass smoking pipe on his person while being checked into the detention center, he was charged with bringing contraband into the jail.
