There was plenty of high school basketball on Monday, as most area teams were in district tournament play.
Viola’s girls secured a regional tournament bid dominating their opener in the 1A-2 District Tournament with a 53-23 victory over Concord. A.J. McCandlis led the Lady Longhorns with 17 points. Viola improves to 26-6 on the season and will travel to Norfork for its semifinal game on Wednesday.
In the other girls’ game, Izard County watched its season come to an end. The Lady Cougars went to Greers Ferry and fell to West Side 61-40. The Lady Eagles will go to Fox on Wednesday to face top-seeded Rural Special in the other semifinal.
Omaha’s boys were bounced from the 1A-1 East District Tournament. The Eagles were edged out by Deer 46-43.
Elsewhere, the Mammoth Spring boys invoked the mercy rule in their regular season finale, as they routed Hillcrest 73-32 to finish as the 1A-3 runners-up. The Bears were led by Aidan Burns and Logan Doss with 18 points each, and Nathaneal Rogers added 11. Mammoth Spring is now 20-9 overall and 9-3 in the league and will host either Crowley’s Ridge Academy or Marked Tree Thursday in the semifinals of the 1A-3 District Tournament.
In Missouri, Bakersfield’s boys were one and done in the Class 2, District 10 Tournament. The Lions lost in overtime at home, as Dora grabbed the 89-87 victory. The Falcons will travel to Gainesville on Wednesday in the semifinals.
