Arkansas State Police (ASP) has identified the man shot by police Tuesday night at the Casey’s General Story in midtown Mountain Home and the situation that led to the shooting.

According to ASP Public Information Officer Bill Sadler, the man shot was 41-year-old Kevin Lee Donovan of Adrian, Missouri, who is hospitalized in Springfield in reported critical condition.

Sadler says Donovan was wanted by Missouri authorities on charges of possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful use of a weapon.

Mountain Home Interim Police Chief Eddie Griffin says three officers were on the scene and one returned fire, after Donovan allegedly shot at a bail bondsman. The officer who fired his weapon will not be identified at this time and is on administrative leave, Griffin adds. The Mountain Home chief confirms no officers were injured in the incident, with ASP adding the bondsman was not injured.

The incident began when a the bondsman located Donovan in Mountain Home at the Casey’s location and called local police to assist in taking him into custody. Officers responded at 7:30 p.m. and confronted Donovan, who brandished a gun and began to back away from authorities. Donovan allegedly retreated west off the business parking lot, raised a gun and fired at the bondsman. The Mountain Home officer returned fire, wounding Donovan.

Sadler says special agents of the ASP Criminal Investigation Division will continue their work questioning witnesses and submitting evidence to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory. An investigative case file will be prepared by state police special agents and turned over to the Baxter County prosecuting attorney, who will consider the findings to determine whether the officer’s use of deadly force was consistent with Arkansas laws, according to Sadler.
