The first Guy Berry Fishing Derby was held Thursday, April 7. Sponsored and made possible by the Guy Berry College and Career Academy Fishing Club, the event took place at Baker Lake inside McCabe Park.

Middle school students were able to cash in on weeks of preparation as they caught numerous fish, including both catfish and bass. Organizers and volunteers said it was a great opportunity for the kids to get outdoors and have some fun, in addition to learning a new hobby.

This year’s event, made possible through the Arkansas Game and Fish’s “Fishing in the Natural State” program, saw numerous first-time anglers participate. After various lessons on casting, knot tying, and other fish-related activities, every student caught a fish, with several catching five or more in the catch-and-release event.

Both the students and educators would like to thank the AGFC for making this event possible and are looking forward to this event in future years.
