A group of anti-vaccine protesters were on hand Monday for Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s “Community COVID Conversation” in Mountain Home.

Thirty minutes before the town hall-style meeting started at midday Monday, about 15 protesters could be seen holding signs across the street from the Vada Sheid Community Center on the campus of Arkansas State University-Mountain Home. The demonstrators also handed out anti-vaccination literature to those who would accept it.

Dan Carley of Mountain Home, one of the people picketing the governor’s meeting, talks about the protesters’ goals.

Once the governor arrived, the protesters first seen outside joined their family members inside The Sheid for the meeting and appeared to number about 30 in total.

When Hutchinson began fielding questions from the floor, the protesters peppered the governor with questions about how the COVID-19 vaccines could protect against the newly emerging delta variant, the potential side effects of the vaccines and whether someone’s natural antibodies were sufficient protection against COVID.

Carley says the protesters assembled at ASU-MH about 10 a.m. Monday.

Hutchinson is scheduled to hold several more town hall-style events talking about the COVID vaccines later this week. The governor is scheduled to visit Dumas, Heber Springs and Siloam Springs this week to answer the public’s questions about the vaccines and promote their use.
