A new program launched by Arkansas traffic officials is being held in a portion of North Central Arkansas. Fulton County is one of five counties participating in the High Five Rural Traffic Safety Program to help increase road safety in more rural parts of the state.

The program will run for 12 months as a public safety initiative aimed at increasing seat belt usage and decreasing serious crashes. Fulton County Sheriff Joe Boshears says he is glad to be working with the Arkansas Department of Transportation on this initiative.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the program is focused on education, enforcement and engineering to encourage residents to have their seat belts fastened while driving. During every traffic stop in Fulton and other counties, officers will use the opportunity to reinforce the importance of seat belt safety, and they’ll also have High Five presentations at area high schools and an active presence of social media.

Sheriff Boshears says road safety is always stressed by his office, especially during holiday times like the upcoming Fourth of July.
