A Boone County man has been arrested for possession of firearms as a felon after the gun falls and shoots him in the leg.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office received a report from North Arkansas Medical Center’s Emergency Room concerning a possible gunshot victim.

Upon arrival, law enforcement spoke with 41-year-old Joseph Dewitt who stated he had shot himself on accident with a .22 caliber revolver. Dewitt said he had been at home with his pistol fell on the floor while he was cleaning and when it went off, it hit him on his left leg near the knee.

Officers asked Dewitt if he knew he was a felon and could not have a firearm. He stated it was not his and belonged to his girlfriend, who he lives with.

Law enforcement met with Dewitt’s girlfriend at her place of employment to advise her of the incident. She stated she was the only one on the rental agreement and she asked officers to go to her apartment and take the pistol. She told officers she did not want it in her apartment and Dewitt brought it home about a month ago or so prior. She stated he told her he got it from one of his friends. Officers then went into the apartment and retrieved the revolver.

Dewitt is charged with a felony count of possession of firearms by certain person. He is currently being held in the Boone County Detention Center on $5,000 bond.
