
The Cotter High School girls’ basketball team went to Mansfield on Wednesday and picked up their first state tournament victory since 1994. The Lady Warriors buried 14 three-pointers as they got past Parkers Chapel 63-57. Cotter improves to 26-9 on the season, and they’ll meet Mount Vernon-Enola Friday in the quarterfinals.
Two area girls’ teams won their openers in the Class 3A State Tournament at Elkins.
Salem invoked the mercy rule as they routed Drew Central 73-40. Marleigh Sellars led the defending state champion Lady Greyhounds with 18 points, Maddie Keen scored 17, and Hadley Reed added 11. Salem improves to 28-6, and they’ll face either Valley Springs or Lamar on Friday.
Mountain View took the last girls’ game of the night as they defeated Jessieville 62-53. The Lady Yellowjackets will go up against Bergman on Friday.
Four area teams played their first round games in the Class 1A State Tournament on the south campus of North Arkansas College in Harrison.
Mammoth Spring’s girls were able to eliminate Jasper 79-36. The Lady Bears were led by Brynn Washam with 20 points, Laney Young had 17, Molly Corbett provided 15, and Tay Davis chipped in 11.
The Omaha girls watched their season come to an end during the evening session. The Lady Eagles were bounced from the tournament with a 65-36 loss to Concord.
Rural Special’s boys were able to knock off the defending state champions as they topped Marked Tree 54-50. The Rebels will go on to the quarterfinals on Friday to play the winner of Thursday’s game between Brinkley and Dermott.
In Missouri, two area girls’ teams won their opening games in the Class 5, District 6 Tournament at Marshfield.
West Plains was able to breeze past Webb City 57-34. The Lady Zizzers’ record now stands at 20-7.
Branson will be West Plains’ opponent in Friday’s semifinals after they beat Springfield Hillcrest 64-51. The Lady Pirates are 16-10 on the year.
The Hollister girls were eliminated from the Class 4, District 11 Tournament at Mountain Grove after falling to the host Lady Panthers 60-25. The Lady Tigers’ season ends at 3-24.
