The city of Hot Springs on Tuesday unveiled its second solar plant. The plant is part of the city’s effort to power 100 percent of city operations with renewable energy.

The solar plant came about from a partnership between the city and Scenic Hill Solar, Arkansas’ largest solar power developer. According to city officials, the new solar plant combined with the old will power roughly 50 percent of city operations—the ultimate goal, 100 percent.

“It’s all about Arkansas. We’re the Natural State and with Hot Springs being a big tourist area, for us being able to lead the way in the state of Arkansas, going 100 percent renewable for our municipal activities is the first step and others will take notice,” said Hot Springs Mayor Pat McCabe.

The new solar plant alone will generate over 6.6 million kilowatts of electricity, or $600,000 worth of power, annually. According to the city, the plant will reduce carbon emissions by more than 129,000 metric tons over the next 30 years.

The new plant will power Hot Springs Wastewater Treatment Facility.
