A woman accused of “skip scanning” at a local business at least eight times in late 2022 pled guilty to the charges against her during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Monday.

Thirty-seven-year-old Stephanie Mathis, who listed a Harrison address on court documents, was charged with theft of property. She is alleged to have visited the store multiple times where she was observed scanning some items, but not others, and leaving the store without paying for the unscanned merchandise.

She was put on probation for five years and ordered to pay $5,800 in victim restitution. It was announced to the court that she would pay $2,500 of the restitution Monday.

On November 30, 2022, Mountain Home Police responded to a shoplifter report at the business. Mathis was reported to have had about $715 in unpaid for merchandise in her possession when she left the store.

After the incident, the store’s Asset Protection Team began investigating earlier trips made to the store by Mathis.

The investigation turned up eight occasions between October 2 and November 19, 2022, where Mathis was alleged to have been detected going through self-service-check-out-stations and allegedly engaging in “skip scanning.”
