A 32-year-old Midway man appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court Monday facing charges in a new drug case.
Jacob Baden Powell pled guilty and was sentenced to six years in prison.
NEW DRUG CASE
In late July this year, Mountain Home police received a request from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office to be on the lookout for Powell on a no bond felony warrant.
Officers were warned that Powell might be armed and was a good candidate to flee at the sight of police.
Powell was reported wearing a red t-shirt and gray pants and could be carrying a maroon backpack. He was said to be riding a black sports bike and wearing a silver motorcycle helmet.
He had been spotted at a business in the Twin Lakes Plaza, but by the time officers arrived on scene, he had relocated to the Plaza Center parking lot.
When officers came to the second location, they spotted the motorcycle. The silver helmet was sitting on the seat. The backpack that had been described was hanging on the handlebar.
A male was seen walking away from the bike. He had on clothing matching the description of what Powell was reported to be wearing.
After viewing Powell’s driver’s license photo, it was determined that he was the person walking away from the bike.
He was ordered to stop and then cuffed without incident. Powell is reported to have said he knew about the active warrant.
A pocketknife strapped to Powell’s pants was taken along with a plastic bag that contained almost 30 grams of what was suspected to be methamphetamine.
In addition, two blue pills landed on the ground next to Powell’s shoe when his pockets were emptied. The pills were believed to contain Fentanyl.
Powell was said to have told police the pills that came out of his pocket and the methamphetamine did not belong to him. After being brought to the Baxter County Detention Center, he was asked if he wanted to elaborate on any of the substances found in his pocket today.
He declined to answer any further questions.
FEDERAL DRUG CASE
In 2019, Powell pled guilty to federal drug charges and was put on probation for four years.
His probation was revoked after he admitted to violating some of the terms and conditions of his probation in 2021, and he was given 10 months in prison.
It was recommended he be held at the federal prison in Forrest City. According to the Bureau of Prisons, Powell has not been in custody since April 11, 2022.
One sentencing hearing in the federal drug case had to be canceled after Powell was drug tested by the U.S. Probation office and was found to be “presumptively positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.”
