A third candidate has announced their intention to run for the Mountain Home Public Schools (MHPS) Board of Education. Brad Butler, a Mountain Home native, former educator, and local business owner, has announced his candidacy for Position 3 on the MHPS Board of Education. Position 3 is currently being held by Dan Smakal, whose term expires in 2025.
Butler, a 2008 graduate of Mountain Home High School, said he has long been interested in serving on the board. He says, “When we first moved back to Mountain Home, shifting from a passionate place of teaching was difficult as it was such a joy of mine seeing the students succeed. I told my wife that one day I would run for school board to fill that void that was left when I left the profession. The time came sooner rather than later, so I am now committed to pouring my love for education into this position on the Mountain Home School Board.”
Butler and his wife, Sarah, moved back to Mountain Home after both taught in public schools in Northwest Arkansas. The couple wanted to raise their three children in what they described as a safe, strong school district and community.
Butler owns and operates Butler Furniture in Mountain Home with his family. A member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, he and his wife sponsor an annual teacher shopping spree, providing a $3,000 gift certificate to a Mountain Home Public Schools educator. He states, “Sarah and I know what a difficult job teaching can be, and we always want to show our Bomber educators that they’re supported. I think about running for school board in the same way that I think of our giveaway: I want to support teachers so they can do their best work every day in their classrooms, which we all know is what makes the greatest impact.”
